Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is one of the most studied and effective tools in addiction treatment. It helps a man see the connection between his thoughts, feelings, and actions, and gives him practical ways to change the patterns that keep addiction alive.
What is CBT?
CBT is a structured, goal-focused form of talk therapy. The core idea is simple but powerful: our thoughts shape our feelings, and our feelings drive our behavior. In addiction, distorted or automatic thoughts often lead straight to using.
In CBT, a man learns to notice those thoughts, question them, and replace them with healthier, more accurate ones, so he can respond to stress, cravings, and triggers in a new way.
How CBT helps in recovery
- Identifying the triggers and thought patterns that lead to use
- Building concrete coping skills for cravings and high-risk moments
- Challenging the shame and negative self-talk that fuel relapse
- Learning problem-solving and communication that hold up under stress
- Creating a relapse-prevention plan a man can actually use
