Prescription Drugs addiction
Prescription drug addiction usually does not start in a dark alley. It starts in a medicine cabinet, with a legitimate prescription. That is exactly what makes it so common and so easy to overlook.
Also known as: painkillers, benzos, uppers
What counts as prescription drug abuse?
Prescription drug abuse means taking a medication in a way it was not prescribed: taking more than directed, using it to get high, taking someone else's medication, or continuing after it is medically needed.
Three groups cause the most harm: opioid painkillers (oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, codeine), benzodiazepines for anxiety and sleep (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin), and stimulants for ADHD (Adderall, Ritalin).
Signs of prescription drug addiction
- Taking more than prescribed or running out early
- Seeing multiple doctors to get more (doctor shopping)
- Using the medication to cope, relax, or get high
- Mood, energy, or sleep changes
- Withdrawal symptoms when stopping
- Being unable to cut back despite wanting to
Why it is so risky
Because these drugs are prescribed by doctors, people assume they are safe at any dose. But opioids and benzodiazepines can be deadly, especially when combined with each other or with alcohol, and stopping some of them suddenly (especially benzodiazepines) can be dangerous on its own.
