Percocet addiction

Percocet is a common prescription painkiller that can quietly turn a short-term prescription into a long-term opioid addiction. Wherever you are with it, recovery is possible.

Also known as: percs, oxycodone-acetaminophen

What is Percocet?

Percocet combines the opioid oxycodone with acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). It is prescribed for moderate to severe pain, and like all opioids it is habit-forming, with tolerance and dependence building over time.

The acetaminophen adds a serious risk: taking large amounts to feel a stronger opioid effect can cause life-threatening liver damage.

Signs of Percocet addiction

  • Needing more to manage pain or feel the same effect
  • Taking more than prescribed or running out early
  • Doctor shopping or buying pills illegally
  • Drowsiness, nodding off, or constricted pupils
  • Withdrawal symptoms between doses
  • Being unable to stop despite the consequences

Withdrawal and detox

Percocet withdrawal follows the opioid pattern: muscle aches, sweating, chills, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, and cravings. Medical detox makes it safer and far more bearable, and is the right first step toward recovery.
