Codeine addiction
Codeine is often seen as a milder, everyday opioid, which is exactly why its addictive pull is so easy to underestimate. If codeine has become a problem, help is available.
Also known as: lean, purple drank, syrup
What is codeine?
Codeine is an opioid used to treat mild to moderate pain and to suppress coughing, so it turns up in prescription cough syrups and combination painkillers. Because it is considered milder, people often assume it is safe to use freely.
But codeine is still an opioid. The body builds tolerance and dependence, and misusing cough syrup (sometimes mixed into 'lean') can lead to full opioid addiction and dangerous overdose.
Signs of codeine addiction
- Taking more than directed, or using cough syrup to get high
- Needing more to feel the same effect
- Buying or stockpiling codeine products
- Drowsiness, slurred speech, or nodding off
- Withdrawal symptoms when stopping
- Being unable to cut back despite wanting to
Withdrawal and detox
Codeine withdrawal brings the familiar opioid symptoms: aches, sweating, chills, nausea, insomnia, and cravings. Medical detox makes coming off codeine safer and more comfortable and is the best way to begin recovery.
