Cocaine addiction

Cocaine promises energy, confidence, and control, and then quietly takes all three. If cocaine has a grip on you or someone you love, there is a way out, and it starts with a single conversation.

Also known as: coke, blow, snow, crack

What is cocaine?

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant made from the coca plant. It usually appears as a fine white powder that is snorted, or as a solid rock form (crack) that is smoked. Either way, it produces a short, intense high followed by a hard crash.

Because the high fades so quickly, people often use again and again in a single session to chase it. That pattern makes cocaine highly addictive and hard on the heart and mind.

Signs of cocaine addiction

  • Bursts of energy, talkativeness, or confidence followed by crashes
  • Needing more to reach the same high
  • Financial problems or money disappearing
  • Restlessness, irritability, or paranoia
  • Runny or damaged nose, or burns on the hands or lips
  • Neglecting responsibilities and relationships
  • Being unable to stop despite wanting to

Effects on the body and mind

Cocaine sharply raises heart rate and blood pressure, and can trigger heart attack, stroke, or seizures, even in young, healthy people. Long-term use can cause paranoia, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and lasting damage to the nose, lungs, and heart.

The crash and withdrawal

Cocaine withdrawal is less physically dangerous than alcohol or opioids, but the emotional crash is intense: exhaustion, deep depression, agitation, and powerful cravings that often drive a person back to using. Structured treatment and support make that first stretch survivable.
